Many people want to claim their Social Security benefit as soon as it becomes available. They have what I call “fear of loss” syndrome. This means that they believe that “if you don’t use it, you lose it.” A throwback from their days in corporate America where if they don’t ”spend” their budget they will lose it next year. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This video discusses 4 Great Reasons to Wait to File Social Security.

  • What I do not understand is why do women have to wait to get their ex-husband’s social security. If I am understanding the Florida laws regarding social security. My ex-husband plans to file for social security at 62 in July of this year. So if I am understanding the laws I have to wait until I reach 62 or older to retire and then I can get half of my ex-social security, and he can get half of mine. This doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t understand why I can not get half of his when he retires so at least I can save up for my retirement. Then when I retire my ex can get half of mine.
